Viljandi Maagümnaasium
Viljandi County Gymnasium
What the official description says about VMG:
Viljandi County Gymnasium teaches children from the 1st to the
12th grade. In the primary and basic school level there are art
classes and in junior high school the students can choose between the
humanities and science streams.
It is also possible to choose between the same two streams in
gymnasium.
As for the humanities, it is important for us to develop the creativity of the students and thus also contributing to shaping interesting and harmonious personalities with positive view of life. It is possible to go more into depth in world literature and contemporary Estonian literature. As optional courses, we offer lectures on history, art history and philosophy, and also theater studies.
As for the science, our aim is to give good education in
science subjects and prepare our students for their future studies in
University in areas of economy, natural or other sciences. During the
three years math, physics, chemistry, biology and technical drawing
will be studied in more detailed way according to our
studentsí own choices. There are two computer classes at
school with total 21working places. The computers are used in several
lessons besides computer science and students take part in several
projects.

This is an example of what a group of people in one science class
looks like. Now most of them are in 12b and about to graduate in
spring 2000.
The students who have chosen the so-called general stream have the possibility to study economics in addition to the compulsory subjects. During this course they are taught basic laws of economy, it will develop their way of thinking and behavior. The motto of the basic program ìJunior Achievementî is ìstudying through activitiesî ñ simulation games of certain situations are necessary for getting the experience of economic matters.
All the students in Viljandi County Gymnasium have the
possibilities to carry out both individual projects and research
works on the subjects they are interested in and also take part in
all kinds of subject oriented contests and competitions. For the
students interested in journalism and expressing their ideas there
are our schoolís own newspaper ìOma Sõnaî
(Own Word) with its long traditions and by now 25-year old school
theater.
But the most important we consider developing responsible, active,
harmonious and assertive young people.

Every year in autumn we have teachers' day when the 12th year students are responsible for the lessons. The 10th graders usually organize the festive part of the day. This day always the teacher of the year in our school is chosen. This autumn this was one of our Estonian teacher's. |
What the students say:
Classes start at 8:15. Usually I have to be in school until 4 p.m.
In the early morning we usually have some test and because of that we
canít sleep. I wonít but
somebody is always sleeping. We are used to sleeping without
closing our eyes.
What we always do is is we wait when the class is over. Then we have
free time which wonít last very long and then again we have to
sit in the class. Sometimes happens something cool or strange. For
example, yourclassmate is drunk or something is burning somewhere.
Those kind of days arenít very often. So the studentsí
days are kind of boring.
The director: - wants to lift quality of studying much
higher than it is now.
- wants to correct the system of pupils missing from classes
- likes that teachers and students are more like friends than
enemies
- thinks that education must be more practical, not theoretical
- wants to print our year-book, but he doesnít know how to do
it (yet)
- likes if every student and teacher is informed
Some schools have a tradition of ëchristeningí the
10th-graders (the first year students in high-school or as well
call it ñ gymnasium) The oldest students (12th grade) prepare
all kinds of tasks for the newbies. Itís fun.
We have many sprts events all through the year. Inwinter we go
skiing and skating and have competitions.
They are now in 10b and they won a sports competition day last
schoolyear.
At the end of school in spring there is this ëday of the last
bellí at school. The oldest students who graduate will
dress like kids and they will run all around the school and town.
This is usually before the exams start or now
sometimes between.
Happy New Year !!!
